Located on an ancient stone which is covered by full of Bazan soil on the east highland of Truong Son mountains, Gia Lai is the second largest province in Vietnam with 97000 ha for growing coffee. That’s why the production area of CWDC VietNam is located in Gia Lai Province in Central Highlands of Vietnam.
The first robusta coffee trees were planted in Gia Lai from the early of 80s. We call them ‘Robusta sẻ’ in Vietnamese which is small beans, high density, strong body. Topographic features here are diversited with many hills and mountains which create the diversity of topography and soil. The difference of temperature between day and night also makes the coffee produce complicated flavors and aromas.
About soil, red Bazan is the most popular one in Gia Lai province and Central highland of Vietnam as well. It is a rich nutritional soil created by ancient volcanic ruins. Bazan is great for growing perennial plants. Moreover, Gia Lai is located in a tropical monsoon climate area that has high moisture, a high amount of rain, no storms, the yearly average temperature is from 22 to 25 degrees celsius. Therefore, the coffee trees here grow very well.
After many years of planting and researching, the coffee trees have become much better. The acreage of coffee increased. The farming scale and yield was improved a lot by hybrid Robusta varieties. The hybrid Robusta are strong, they produce big beans, the yield was able to reach 15 – 20 tons of coffee cherries/ha. The farmer’s living was getting better because of this.
Furthermore, all those things contributed to make Vietnam become the biggest Robusta exporter in the world. Robusta coffee is harvested in Kom Tum and Gia Lai from October to December. Harvest season spans from November through January in Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Lam Dong provinces.
In most cases, Arabica coffee is picked between August and October. Harvest season runs from September to November in Duc Trong and Lam Dong and from December to February in Da Lat.
Coffee cherries are hand-picked when they are 95 percent ripe on the tree. This percentage may be lower towards the conclusion of the season when collecting coffee, the gardener must prepare clean coffee tarpaulins to spread under the tree.
Coffee should be harvested according to each tree, and the canvas should be spread out in each row to ensure that no coffee is missed. Coffee gardens that are maturing early must be plucked first. To avoid missing coffee, pick from top to bottom and from the inside out when picking coffee from a tree.
