A Robusta coffee tree’s productive life spans roughly 20 to 25 years. After that, fruit yields decline to the point where the tree is no longer economically viable to maintain. Farmers clear these aging trees to make room for new plantings, a cycle that has been repeated across the Central Highlands for generations.

The Wood That Had No Value, Until Now
For most of the coffee industry’s history, the branches and trunks of retired coffee trees had virtually no commercial value. Farmers would burn them in the fields, use them as cooking fuel, or leave them to decompose. The carbon stored in decades of growth (the hardness and density that only comes with 20+ years of slow growth in rich soil) was simply wasted.

Harvest: Timing Is Everything
Coffee wood collection happens during the dry season (roughly October through March) when low humidity allows the wood to begin the air-drying process naturally in the field before being transported to our facility. Collecting during the rainy season would result in wood with excessively high moisture content that takes far longer to stabilize and is more susceptible to mold during transit.
CWDC Vietnam maintains long-term purchasing relationships with farming communities across the Central Highlands. This is not spot-purchasing from whoever happens to have wood available in a given week. We work with the same farmers year after year, planning our raw material needs months in advance and securing supply before the harvest season begins. This gives us consistent access to the quality we need and gives our farmer partners reliable income planning.
Processing: Shaping and Drying
Once raw branches arrive at our facility, they are inspected for quality (checking for signs of disease, insect damage, or irregular grain that might affect finished product durability) and then cut to the size profiles that will become our finished products.
The cut pieces are then sanded to remove rough edges and surface irregularities while retaining the natural texture that dogs find so engaging. No chemical treatments are applied at any stage. No sealants, no preservatives, no artificial hardeners. The wood is finished only with mechanical processing (cutting, sanding, shaping) and nothing else.
The drying process is the most critical and time-consuming stage of production. Each batch is air-dried until it reaches a moisture content between 8 and 15 percent (the range that produces a chew toy that is durable without being dangerously hard, and stable without risk of mold. Achieving this takes months, not days. We measure moisture content on every batch before it proceeds to packaging and export. This is not an estimate or a range) it is a measured specification that every product must meet before it leaves our facility.
Quality Control: What We Check Before Shipping
